Patience is the key here. You can't just scan for ten minutes and expect a result, you need to leave your computer scanning over night in most cases to get anything.

Thats what most people do, is find proxies off the web and retest them. Good luck on finding new proxies that no one has posted. Even if you get some new proxies on Proxy Hunter, it doesn't mean they are new. Put the proxy into google with quatations around it like "71.230.92.131:8080" and search. You can then find how many times this proxy has been posted, and sometimes its been on the net a whole month already or even longer. To be honest, i spent a week almost just scanning for *new proxies* no one has posted, and it was a huge waste of my time because even they die or be temp. blocked.

The only good solution i see to scanning is getting a large group of people, and everyone scanning a very small piece of the pie. (let each other know what your scanning) At the end the piece of pie will be greatly larger, and you probably would have a OK collection of proxies as a group.

To each his own, i wish you great luck
Has anyone really had great success scanning proxies :?:

As you might guess I have done a bunch of diferent things in this area. What I tend to find which is highly effective is to take access logs from large websites of 100,000+ users/day and scanning those ip's for Proxies. Although this generally leads to some nice results however it's not really an option for most people.

I even use to scrape statistic tracker sites for lists of IP's and I currently run several email accounts purely for Spam which with over 10,000 spam emails/day I generally get around 50 working non RBL listed Socks.

Plain old sequential scanning has also had nice results for me too. I just currently don't have time to setup another box for the purpose while I am in Chicago.

I have considered making a distributed scanner, however I don't think it would be something many users would be interested in.

I would be, the idea is so far fetched in a way, but good. I hunt the old fatsion way and oviouly that doesnt work well.

If people are interested in running a distributed scanner then I am happy to take the time to make one. It's more the fact I doubt many people would run it though.

I think it's a great idea...

What if you made it a screen saver type of application similar to SETI @ home? That way you could have it running while you were away from the computer, sleeping, etc. I could probably help you with some of it as well if you are serious about it.

Regards ~

I am serious that I would develop this. However for a number of reasons I refuse to make anything I do open source, so having multiple developers is not really an option. The only thing is I need to allocate enough time to make something like this as bulletproof as possible.

True - to make it work it's probably going to take some serious time dedication to develop, not to mention really good planning.
