Default What am I doing right?

First off, thanks for reading/answering my questions,

I have been looking into Web Anonymity for the last couple of days and have been trying to solve my own problems but would love some help.

I downloaded Charon, loaded in an anonymous HTTP proxy list from the public section with 106 sites and only 7 came up good.

My problem is probably with my ISP and/or router because all 7 good sites returned were based in the U.S. on port 80.

I loaded, tried using them, and both my browsers did the same thing which was pull up the same website for every link I would try.

The browsers I used were Firefox and IE7, the URL's were
208.106.250.202:80-this went to Future Now Web Design
66.119.43.47:80-this went to Webshots (Photo Sharing hosting, etc.)

Could you tell me what I have to configure to allow other ports than 80 in Charon? (I tried with or without my firewall on, made no difference)

Also, is getting these websites normal and I need to look at more or am I going down the wrong road?

Thanks in advance for your help or advise.

Doesn't sound like you have done much of anything correctly.

Start by learning how to configure a proxy to be used in your browser. Read the information contained in the link below.

How to set up a proxy in your browser

The only proxy list of 106 posted in our public anonymous section today (9/25) is that of Pamasa79. I just tested it and the following proxies were still anonymous:

208.106.250.202:80

81.169.177.139:8080

(By the way, I notice you didn't bother to post a "thank you". That's not very considerate for someone now asking to be spoon fed).

I'm guessing you know as much about how to configure Charon as you do about using a proxy in your browser. Meaning little to no knowledge whatsoever. If you only found 7 anonymous proxies in that list, then you obviously are using a bad proxyjudge. Most of the judges that were included with the program were already dead when the program was released (years ago). Go to the Proxy Tools section here and find the list of Proxyjudges (here's a clue, it's a "sticky" ... meaning it's located at the top of the posted threads). Copy only the "azenv" judges into Charon's "Judge Options".

There are tutorials available for Charon in our Tutorials section as well as on the Charon's site.

Thanks for your help Lorrisa,

I had my browser set up as described and I tested the judge I was using that was the type you described, and yes most of the origianal judge list was no good.

I will try another judge and see if that helps, do you have a reference to a thread that talks about ISP/router configuration?

Thanks again

It is highly unlikely that your problems are with your ISP or Router.

I do not understand your statement regarding the browser setup. You were trying to open the proxies in your browser like any website. That is why you got those pages. I think you are still very confused. Slow down and READ carefully.

Regarding Charon, how did you know to change from the default proxyjudge setting (internal) to external?

It is quite possible that, like me, you cannot use proxies with ports 80 and 8080. You may also not be able to use the new breed of proxies with ports 11011, 11022, 11033, etc., etc. You'll need to experiment a bit.

How many of the proxies that I retested for you are still working?

I am setting up my browser to manualy connect to proxy servers as documented in your tutorial.

When I click on a favorite, go to my home page or type in a URL manually it displays the correct address in the address bar but goes to the(Webshots) site I metioned earlier for all of these sites,

66.119.43.37:80
66.119.43.36:80
66.119.43.34:80
66.119.43.32:80
66.119.43.31:80
66.119.43.30:80

And when I change my proxy server address to

208.106.250.202:80

I am directed to a different site I mentioned above (Web design something or other)
even though my address bar displays Yahoo! (or any other one I try).

I am not just typing in the proxy server at the address bar.

I went to my service provider's web site and reading through the setup info it said make sure you check the autodetect box(or something to that effect),
Suddenlink does not support proxy servers.

So how do I get around this?

Thank you Lorissa for your help so far.

As far as the judge goes, I left it internal but tested the internal list and used one of the 3 that were still good and the type you refered to earlier.

I will try an external judge, but my main issue is the non redirecting of my request just giving me the same website for all addresses entered.

Thank you

Sorry, I do not understand what you are doing with the browser at all.

As I suspected, you are using the "internal judge" default setting in Charon. This doesn't work properly, if at all, for approximately 50% of the people who attempt to use it. So, until you change the setting to "external judge", it won't matter what external proxyjudge you have selected to use because it simply won't use it/them.

Once you have a working proxy configured in your browser, go to this site:

Code:
http://www.cmyip.com/
It should indicate your IP Address as that of the proxy you configured your browser to use. If it doesn't, something is wrong. If it shows your IP Address, then the proxy is transparent (non-anonymous).

Sounds like you might be using redirecting proxies based on what you are telling me. Simply change to a complete different proxy and not any in the following group:

66.119.43.37:80
66.119.43.36:80
66.119.43.34:80
66.119.43.32:80
66.119.43.31:80
66.119.43.30:80

In fact, test a completely different proxy list and make a selection from those that test anonymous using Charon.

Thanks for your help I found one that works by using a different judge.

I still would like to know why the first ones failed (it was not a setup problem, I retested it)and why most of the others I tried gave me an error page.

Any ideas?

Thank you

I already answered your question in the simpliest of terms. All of the following proxies in Pamasa79's list are not really working proxies at all. Some (the ones you mentioned) are redirecting proxies ... meaning they give a false positive result when testing them (and are actually useless).

I will be adding at least the following group of proxies into my personal "exclusion list" (for Charon that would be into any one of the "ini" files contain in the filterfiles folder.

208.106.250.202:80
66.119.43.30:80
66.119.43.31:80
66.119.43.32:80
66.119.43.34:80
66.119.43.36:80
66.119.43.37:80

Surprisingly, for me anyway, Charon is incapable of detecting that these are distorting proxies (gateways) at all. In fact, I believe only AATools recognizes this. However, that doesn't matter, the fact remains that until someone like yourself attempts to use them directly in their browser for surfing, no one is the wiser.

You just ran into a bad group, and I am sorry I didn't recognize this sooner. But based on what you wrote originally is sounded like you were attempting to use a proxy by loading it with your browser as you would a web site.
